The Angel of the North is a contemporary sculpture located in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England. Designed by artist Antony Gormley, it was completed in 1998 and has since become an iconic symbol of the North East of England.

The sculpture stands 20 meters (66 feet) tall with a wingspan of 54 meters (177 feet), making it one of the largest sculptures of an angel in the world. It is made of steel and is designed to withstand the strong winds common in the area.

The artwork was commissioned to regenerate the area and serve as a landmark reflecting the region’s industrial heritage and its transition to a post-industrial future. The Angel’s wings are angled forward to create a sense of embrace and connection with the community.

Since its unveiling, the Angel of the North has become a popular tourist attraction and an important cultural symbol, representing hope, strength, and the spirit of the North East.
